[Correspondence] Ethical standards in Cambodia: is silent witnessing sufficient?
Fri, 12 Mar 2010 00:00:00 +0100 | LANCET
It is disappointing to see the Government of Cambodia enforce coercive treatment of opiate-dependent people, and with a drug of questionable efficacy. In 2004, the same government responded to pleas from sex workers and halted a trial to test the preventive value of an antiretroviral drug. (Source: LANCET)

Humans are driving extinction faster than species can evolve
Sun, 07 Mar 2010 22:59:54 +0100 | Guardian Unlimited Science
Conservationists say rate of new species slower than diversity loss caused by the destruction of habitats and climate changeFor the first time since the dinosaurs disappeared, humans are driving animals and plants to extinction faster than new species can evolve, one of the world's experts on biodiversity has warned.Conservation experts have already signalled that the world is in the grip of the "sixth great extinction" of species, driven by the destruction of natural habitats, hunting, the spread of alien predators and disease, and climate change. However until recently it has been hoped that the rate at which new species were evolving could keep pace with the loss of diversity of life.Speaking in advance of two reports next week on the state of wildlife in Britain and Europe, Simon Stuart...

Decreased in vitro susceptibility of Plasmodium falciparum Isolates to artesunate, mefloquine, chloroquine and quinine in Cambodia from 2001 to 2007.
Mon, 01 Mar 2010 00:00:00 +0100 | Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy
This study describes the results of antimalarial in vitro susceptibility assays and molecular polymorphisms of Plasmodium falciparum isolates from Cambodia. The samples were collected from patients enrolled in therapeutic efficacy studies (TES) conducted by the Cambodian National Malaria Control Program for the routine efficacy monitoring of artemisinin-based combination therapy or ACT (artesunate-mefloquine and artemether-lumefantrine combinations). The isolates (n=2041) were obtained from nine sentinel sites during 2001 - 2007. Among these, 1,588 were examined for their in vitro susceptibility to four antimalarials (artesunate, mefloquine, chloroquine and quinine) and 851 isolates were genotyped for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP). The geometric means of the IC50 (GMIC50) were sign...
